Networking, a major catalyst in the business world, gets a power push in these posh greens where the who's who of the business world hobnob to strike much more than a ball.
AHMEDABAD: They say the Japanese refuse to do business where there is no golf. And that more deals in the western world are struck while teeing off on the golf course than over a cup of tea in the boardroom. Networking, a major catalyst in the business world, gets a power push in these posh greens where the who's who of the business world hobnob to strike much more than a ball.
Now taking a cue from this strategy, globetrotting Amdavadi businessmen are ambling on to the greens to put the golf course at par with a board room. Which is why Shailesh Iyer, top honcho of a leading telecom company, chose the golf links to break the ice with corporate clients instead of chatting up over a boring dinner. "The idea was to build relationships with corporate bigwigs as a long-term strategy to grow business and were they impressed!"
As mineral water entrepreneur Behram Metha of Sheelpe Enterprises will tell you: "Three hours of quality time spent in the ambience of a lush green golf course helps relax and build relationships in business circles better than the dull confines of a board room. I struck the biggest deal of my life and made many close business partnerships on the course." Realtor Devang Shah seconds this: "I often meet up clients from India or abroad on the golf course as one can discuss business informally at length and formalise it in the board room later."
"It's a good place to network and get close to big businessmen," says city-based cement dealer Ruchir Teli who claims to have cemented many a business relationship this way. And as a seasoned golfer and top businessman points out "The golfing greens are a better way of not just sizing up prospective business partners but also making a good impression on them, which is why I always make it a point to invite them for a game of golf first." And so what if business discussions usually come up last at these greens, after the game over a cuppa. But it sure is a sureshot way of striking the deal.
